The application window for the 2026-2027 season is now closed. The next window will open in the spring of 2027.

 

Below is information regarding the process of becoming a new official with the EBOA. An application process has been implemented to ensure we can properly support and develop qualified new officials.

EBOA Application Process

The EBOA welcomes new officials each September. You must be at least 15 years old to apply. The clinic is open to successful applicants who receive an invitation from the Director of Recruitment and Retention.

The application process consists of three parts:

  1. Application
  2. Clinic and Rules Evaluation
  3. Practical (On-court) Evaluation
A. About the Application
  • Timeline: Online applications (including references and resumes) are typically accepted from April to June each year.
  • Review: Invitations for the New Officials Clinic will be sent via email towards the end of July.
B. Clinic and Rules Evaluation
  • Certification: NOCP Level 1
  • Details: A full-day clinic in September (typically at Jasper Place High School).
  • Fee: $60.00
  • Content: Instruction on FIBA rules, responsibilities, and mechanics.
  • Exam: A passing mark of 70% on the rules exam is required to proceed.

C. Practical Evaluation

Applicants will participate in an abbreviated on-court refereeing experience, usually the weekend following the clinic. Successful candidates will be offered EBOA membership.

Complete the free Safe Sport Training course (NCCP).

  • Referee Jersey: $60.00
  • First Year Membership Dues: $55
  • Black pants required.
  • Black shoes recommended (required after first year)

New officials can expect to earn between $35 and $50 per game once their initial investment is complete.
